The mat-producing town of Badian celebrates its fiesta evey July with special events that highlight its people's traditions, culture, and products. Among the featured activities are wiris-wiris (sketch contest), market encounter/forum, and a grass mat (banig) costume dance parade. Dinagat Festival (Cordova, Cebu) Held in Cordova, Cebu, the festival highlights the distinctive cultural heritage of the Cordovahanons by showcasing authentic traditional rituals and dances based on the community's fishing culture. The interpretative dance movement imitates sea life and/or the occupational rituals related to fishing, accompanied by music from traditional instruments. Kabkaban Festival (Carcar, Cebu) Celebrated on November 24-25 in honor of the town's patron, St. Catherine of Alexandria. Carcar town is noted for its Old Spanish style houses in a quiet countryside setting. During fiestas, the residents invite friends, relatives and town visitors into their homes to taste popular local delicacies. Truly, a lively and enjoyable event. Kadaugan sa Mactan (Lapu-Lapu City) A weeklong affair celebrated yearly, featuring a spectacular series of musical plays and cultural events culminating in a one-day reenactment of the historic battle of Mactan between the forces of Lapulapu and Ferdinand Magellan. Mantawi Festival (Mandaue City) Christened from the Mantawi Tree that used to abound in Mandaue, Mantawi Festival is celebrated every 3oth of August with a grand civic parade, incorporating dance, music and theater that reflect Mandaue's rich heritage, history, lifestyle and vigor. Nuestra Señora De Regla Fiesta (Lapu-Lapu City) Held to honor the patroness of Opon at Lapu-Lapu City every 20th and 21st of November, this religious and social event reveals the deep religious faith of the people and the penchant for merry-making. A food fair, carnival, procession and coronation of the Fiesta Queen highlight the festivity. Semana Santa Sa Bantayan (Bantayan Island) A unique mixture of solemn religious rites and local celebration highlights the Holy Week activities in Bantayan Island. The normally quiet island is visited by relatives and friends of residents, as well as tourists, to experience the solemn rites or to cool off the summer heat in the beautiful white sandy beaches and clear tropical waters. Sinulog (Cebu City) Celebrated every 3rd Sunday of January, the Sinulog is Cebu's biggest and most popular festival. The feast is in honor of the Holy Image of Senyor Santo Niño de Cebu. During the fiesta frenzy, cries of Pit Señor! (Viva Santo Niño!) echo, as revelers, immersed in wild color costumes and body paints, parade down city streets. Sugat sa Minglanilla (Minglanilla) One of the best-known crowd-drawing Christian Lenten rites in Central Visayas is the annual Easter Sunday pageant called Sugat (Cebuano for encounter), held in the town of Minglanilla, a few kilometers south of Cebu City. The celebration is an elaborate production depicting the meeting between the risen Christ and his grieving mother. It features children as angels with wings sparkling with lights, slowly sliding down invisible wires from a pulley system onto the church entrance and altar. Tagbo (Poro, Camotes Island) Poro traces its roots via a festival of pageant proportion. The municipality had its beginning in the village of Tagbo which, today, also refers to a unique dance ritual celebrated every 18th and 19th of January in honor of the Patron Santo Niño de Poro. Tres De Abril Celebration (Cebu City) Celebrated every 3rd of April in commemoration of the Spanish resistance in the south. This historic battle under Leon Kilat's leadership gave Cebu the glory of being the first major island outside Luzon to oppose Spanish dominance in the 19th century. |
