Do's & Don'ts

Do smile.
Cebuanos smile a lot. A smile accompanied by a slight nod is considered an informal form of greeting among friends.

Do show respect for age. Use proper appellations for elders and relations.

Avoid wearing rubber thongs or slippers to parties and special occasions.

Don't use the common sign of OK to signify approval. It means money in the local community. Use the thumbs-up sign instead.

Don't point at a person using your forefinger when conversing. It is considered rude and degrading.

An informal way of calling a person is to beckon with the hand in a gentle downward motion. "Pssst" is another popular way to get someone's attention. As a rule, however, it is safest to call the person by name or even better, by nickname.

Do insist on using the taximeter when traveling by local taxi. The driver might attempt to get you to agree on a fixed price. This is against the law. using the meter is compulsory.
